On 2 August 2027 the Moonβs shadow crosses southern Egypt, and Luxor sits almost exactly on the centreline. Totality lasts about 6 minutes 22 seconds, which makes it one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century. Astronomers rate Luxor as one of the best places on Earth to see it: August skies over Upper Egypt are almost always clear, and you can watch from beside some of the most famous ruins in the world.
This guide covers the timing, the best viewing spots, the August heat problem and when to book. For the sleeper-train package that targets the eclipse, see our news report on the Eclipse Express to Luxor.

Where to Watch: Luxor and the Centreline
West Bank (best for ancient backdrops)
The West Bank gives you wide horizons and open ground, which matters at midday when the sun is high. Totality is overhead, so the βsunset horizon glowβ you see in photos lands all around you rather than behind a single temple. Good options are:
- Hatshepsutβs Temple at Deir el-Bahari, where the cliff amphitheatre frames the sky. Expect organised group access, so a guided option is the realistic route.
- Colossi of Memnon and the fields around them, easier to reach independently and less tightly controlled.
- Medinet Habu and the Ramesseum, quieter than Karnak with space to spread out.
Our West Bank tours guide lays out how these sites connect. Whatever you choose, assume access rules, ticketing and crowd limits for 2 August will be set closer to the date. Confirm them with your tour operator or hotel.
Nile cruise decks
A Nile cruise moored near Luxor gives you a shaded sundeck, cold drinks and a clear view of the sky over the river, without needing to move on the day. Many operators are building eclipse departures that finish or sit in Luxor on 2 August. These are the first products to sell out, so look at our Nile cruise ship guide and Nile cruise itinerary, then ask any operator whether the ship will be moored in Luxor, not sailing, at 1pm.
Luxor hotel terraces and pools
If you want comfort and your own schedule, a Nile-side hotel with a rooftop or pool terrace is the lowest-effort choice. See our Luxor where-to-stay guide for areas, and browse Luxor hotels on Booking.com with free cancellation turned on, so you can lock a room now and adjust later. East Bank hotels near Luxor Temple have the best restaurants, while West Bank guesthouses put you closer to the open desert horizon.
Hurghada and the Red Sea coast (day trips)
Hurghada also lies in the path, and reports put totality on the Red Sea coast at close to six minutes. The catch is that it is a different trip from a Luxor eclipse: you would be watching from a beach resort rather than the temples. If you are staying in a Hurghada resort already, you do not need to travel at all. If you would rather see the temples on eclipse day, the Hurghada to Luxor trip is a long road journey of about 4 to 5 hours each way, so we do not recommend doing it on 2 August itself. Read our Hurghada to Luxor route guide and the day-trip option and plan the temple visit for the day before or after instead.
August Heat: The Real Risk
Luxor in August is one of the hottest places in Egypt. Daytime highs of 42 to 46Β°C are normal, and the eclipse falls at 1pm, the hottest part of the day. Sitting still on open ground for two to three hours of partial phases is a genuine heat risk. Our Egypt in August guide and best time to visit Luxor cover the climate in detail. For eclipse day:
- Pick a spot with shade you can step into between the partial phases, such as a cruise deck canopy or hotel terrace. Remove your glasses only during totality.
- Carry at least 3 litres of water each and add electrolytes.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, light long sleeves and sunscreen. Eclipse glasses protect eyes, not skin.
- Do your temple visits at dawn on the days around the eclipse. Gates open early, and mornings are far more comfortable. We suggest a guided Luxor tour starting at sunrise, or a hot air balloon flight at first light.
- Tell your hotel what you plan to do, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol before totality.
Booking Timeline
Treat this as a 9-month window. Nothing official is guaranteed, but demand is already visible.
- Now to January 2027: Book Nile cruise cabins and eclipse group tours. These have the smallest supply. Many operators are already advertising sold-out or waitlisted departures.
- Now to March 2027: Book Luxor hotels with free cancellation. Nile-side rooms and anywhere with a rooftop will go first. Luxor has limited high-end capacity compared with the demand a once-in-a-generation eclipse creates.
- By spring 2027: Book internal transport. See our Cairo to Luxor sleeper train guide and Luxor airport transfer guide. Flights into Luxor and sleeper berths are limited, and the days around 2 August will be tight.
- June to July 2027: Reserve guided tours, balloon flights and eclipse-day activities through Luxor tours once the official eclipse-day access rules are published.
Prices in August are usually low because of the heat. Expect eclipse dates to run well above normal summer rates, and treat any figures you see now as provisional (as of 2026).
How to Spend the Days Around Totality
Eclipse day is only a few hours. Build a trip around it:
- Days 1 to 2: Luxor East Bank, with Karnak Temple at opening time and Luxor Temple in the evening.
- Day 3: West Bank at dawn: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu, back at your hotel before midday.
- Day 4 (eclipse): Easy morning, in position by 11:30am with shade, water and glasses. Totality is around 1:05pm.
- Day 5: Move on to Aswan, or take a cruise downriver.
If you are choosing between destinations, our Luxor vs Aswan guide compares the two. Aswan is also in the path, so some cruises end there.
Eclipse Safety Basics
- Use only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses or viewers, and buy them before you travel. Do not rely on buying them in Luxor.
- Never use ordinary sunglasses, and never look at the sun through a camera, binoculars or phone without a certified solar filter.
- Only during the full minutes of totality is it safe to look without protection. Put the glasses back on as soon as the bright edge of the sun reappears.
