Hurghada and Luxor are about 280 km apart, but the Eastern Desert sits between them and the only sensible way across is by road. For tour prices and pick-up times see our Hurghada to Luxor day trip page. This page covers the route itself, every realistic way to make the trip, what it costs and how to decide between a day trip and an overnight stay. For the wider list of excursions from the resort, see our Hurghada day trips guide.
The Route: Hurghada, Safaga, Qena, Luxor
The road leaves Hurghada heading south along the Red Sea coast to Safaga (roughly 50-60 km), then turns inland on the Safaga-Qena highway. This crosses the Eastern Desert through dry rocky wadis with very few services, and joins the Nile Valley at Qena. From Qena, the final stretch follows the valley south to Luxor. Total driving time is approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic, checkpoints and how often the driver stops.
Practical points for the drive:
- Few services in the desert. Fill the tank and carry water; fuel and cafes are concentrated at Safaga and Qena.
- Checkpoints. Expect several police checkpoints. Keep your passport accessible, not in the hold of a coach.
- Night driving. Avoid driving this road yourself after dark; livestock and unlit vehicles are real hazards. Tour operators generally run return trips overnight with experienced drivers, but a hotel stay removes the issue.
- Timing. Leaving at 06:00-07:00 means arriving in Luxor before the midday heat. In July and August, open-air sites such as Valley of the Kings are punishing after 11:00.
Ways to Get from Hurghada to Luxor
Private transfer or car with driver. The most flexible option. A one-way private transfer typically takes around 4 hours and costs approximately USD 80-130 per vehicle as of 2026, depending on vehicle size and negotiation. You can stop where you like and be dropped at a Luxor hotel. Return transfers and βwait and returnβ day packages are common. Compare airport and city transfers in Egypt for pricing benchmarks, and read our Luxor airport transfer guide for arrival logistics at the other end.
Public bus. Go Bus and other coach operators serve the Hurghada to Luxor corridor, with fares reported at roughly USD 10-15. Journey time is longer than a private car, often 5 to 6 hours with stops, and schedules change, so confirm the current timetable and seat availability directly with the operator on the day you plan to travel. The coach is the cheapest way if you are going for one or more nights.
Organised day tour. The simplest option for a short visit. Shared group tours cost approximately EGP 850-1,100 per person including transport, a guide and entry to 3-4 sites (as of 2026); private tours with an Egyptologist guide run approximately EGP 3,000-5,000 for two people. Entry fees are sometimes excluded, so ask. Browse Luxor tours from Hurghada or see operator comparisons in our best tours in Luxor guide.
Self-drive. Possible with a rental car, but we do not recommend it for a first visit: the desert road is long, checkpoints are frequent and parking at Luxor sites is limited. If you do rent, check car hire options in Egypt.
Day Trip or Overnight?
| Day trip | One night in Luxor | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the ground | 6-8 hours | 1.5 days |
| Sites realistic | 3-4 (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Karnak) | Both banks plus Luxor Temple at night |
| Time in vehicle | 8-9 hours | 8-9 hours (split over two days) |
| Best for | Travellers with only one free day | Anyone who wants to see Karnak without rushing |
A day trip works, but it means roughly 15 hours door to door for 6 hours of sightseeing. We recommend one night if your schedule allows: you can add a sunrise hot air balloon over Luxor, spend a proper morning in Karnak Temple and leave the west bank for the afternoon. Search hotels in Luxor on Booking.com or read our where to stay in Luxor guide.
What You See on the Standard Programme
Most Hurghada tours follow the same pattern: the west bank first (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon), lunch, then Karnak on the east bank. The Luxor monuments form part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis site. Tomb tickets are sold separately from the main entry, and entry fees at the time of writing include approximately EGP 240 for three tombs in the Valley of the Kings and EGP 300 extra for Tutankhamunβs tomb (as of 2026; re-check on arrival). Our Luxor west bank tours guide explains how to pace the day.
Choosing and Booking
- Ask for a licensed Egyptologist guide. Depth at Karnak differs sharply between a licensed guide and a general escort.
- Check what is included. Entry fees, lunch and the Hurghada hotel pickup time are the common gaps.
- Book a day ahead at least between October and April, when better guides are committed early.
- Compare prices. Hotel desks mark up tours by 20-40% against operators on Sheraton Road.
