Egypt in August: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
August mirrors July’s conditions with one difference: by late August, the very first signs of the approaching autumn appear in northern Egypt. The heat remains extreme, foreign tourism is at its annual low, and the Red Sea continues to offer the best reason to visit. For budget-conscious divers and beach travellers, August delivers strong value.
Weather Across Egypt in August
Cairo and the Delta: Daytime highs of 34–39°C with overnight lows of 23–25°C. Conditions are almost identical to July. The Khamsin hot winds that occasionally blow in spring are absent, but the sustained heat and low humidity mean dehydration is a constant risk. The city empties somewhat as many Cairenes head to the coast.
Luxor and Aswan: Still extreme — 42–46°C in Luxor, similar in Aswan. Slightly lower than July’s absolute peaks but the difference is academic. The same rules apply: any site visits must happen between 6am and 9am. Afternoon excursions to outdoor sites are not advisable under any circumstances.
Red Sea coast (Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab): Air temperatures of 35–39°C, water temperatures of 28–30°C — the warmest of the year. The sea breeze moderates the coast considerably. August brings the calmest sea conditions of the year along the southern Red Sea, making it prime season for liveaboard diving trips to Elphinstone, Daedalus, and the Brothers Islands.
Sinai interior: Hot at lower elevations. The St Catherine’s area remains the Sinai’s coolest spot at 28–33°C by day, dropping to 14–17°C overnight. The Gulf of Aqaba side (Dahab, Nuweiba) gets consistent afternoon breezes that take the edge off.
Red Sea Diving Conditions
August is the peak month for Red Sea water temperature at 28–30°C, and visibility remains excellent at 20–30m. The warm water attracts oceanic species to the offshore reefs — manta rays are regularly seen at Elphinstone, and whale shark sightings continue at the deep south sites through August. Shore-based diving at popular sites like the Blue Hole (Dahab) and Ras Mohammed (Sharm) is comfortable without any thermal protection. For serious divers, August liveaboards to the remote southern reefs offer the best combination of marine life, calm seas, and reduced pricing.
Crowds and Pricing
Foreign tourist numbers in August are the lowest of any month. The Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple in Luxor can feel eerily quiet compared to the November peak. The Pyramids of Giza see modest domestic visitors but very few international tour groups.
Egyptian domestic tourism remains high through August — school holidays continue until mid-September. Red Sea resorts are busy with Egyptian families, particularly on weekends (Thursday–Friday). International-standard resorts in Hurghada and Sharm run 2,500–5,500 EGP per night — reasonable by peak-season standards elsewhere.
Cairo hotel prices are at their lowest: mid-range options average 1,500–3,000 EGP per night. Nile cruises are heavily discounted or run reduced schedules. Flight prices from Europe to Egypt are low relative to the October–March corridor.
Festivals and Events
Eid al-Adha (date varies): In some years, Eid al-Adha falls in August. The same considerations as July apply — domestic travel surges, resort prices spike, and public services pause for 3–4 days. Check the Islamic calendar for your specific travel year.
Wafaa El-Nil (15 August): This public holiday commemorates the ancient Nile flood. While the celebration is modest today, it marks the historical peak of the annual inundation — the event that deposited fertile silt across the floodplain and sustained Egyptian agriculture for millennia. Lake Nasser reaches its highest levels in August–September as Ethiopian monsoon runoff arrives.
School holiday peak: Egyptian families travel heavily through August. Trains from Cairo to Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan require advance booking. Domestic flights to Hurghada and Sharm sell out on weekends.
What to Do in August
- Red Sea liveaboards: The best month for deep south itineraries. Calm seas, warm water, pelagic encounters, and lower prices than winter
- Dahab: Budget-friendly, reliable wind for kitesurfing, and the Blue Hole is less crowded than in cooler months. The backpacker and freediving community is active year-round
- Museum days in Cairo: The Grand Egyptian Museum is fully air-conditioned and can absorb an entire day. Combine with Old Cairo churches and the Citadel (covered areas)
- Alexandria: The Mediterranean coast is 5–8°C cooler than Cairo, making Alexandria a relative escape. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Qaitbay Citadel are comfortable to visit

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is August a good time to visit Egypt?
- August is not recommended for general tourism to Egypt's archaeological sites due to extreme heat. For the Red Sea (Hurghada, Sharm, Marsa Alam), August is fine — hot but with sea access, and water visibility is excellent.
- What is the sea temperature in the Red Sea in August?
- Red Sea water temperatures in August reach 28–30°C — the warmest of the year. Excellent for snorkelling and diving in a thin rashguard. Some divers prefer cooler months for extended dives.
- Are there any advantages to visiting Egypt in August?
- The main advantages are: very low prices, minimal tourist queues at major sites, and the Red Sea in peak summer condition. The disadvantage — extreme heat — is significant and should not be underestimated.
