Choosing a Nile cruise ship matters more than most travellers expect. The temples are the same on every Luxor to Aswan sailing, but cabin size, noise, food, guiding and how many other boats are moored beside you vary enormously from one ship to the next. This page is about the ship itself. For what each tier costs overall, see our Nile cruise prices guide; for the difference between cruise types, start with the Nile cruise overview; for sailing a traditional sail boat instead, read dahabiya vs Nile cruise.

Prices below are indicative bands for the 2026/27 season, as of 2026. Ship rates move with the date, cabin and operator, so treat them as a guide and check the live rate before booking. Operator packages we found for a four-night Luxor-Aswan sailing ranged from roughly USD 390 to USD 944 per person on mid-range and deluxe ships, which matches the bands here.

Luxury: Oberoi Philae and Sanctuary Sun Boat IV

Oberoi Philae is a small ship with around 27 cabins, so the dining room is never crowded and the sun deck rarely is either. Service is attentive, guiding is consistently praised, and cabins are large. Expect from approximately USD 450 per person per night as of 2026, with suites higher. This is our pick for honeymooners; our Egypt honeymoon guide shows where a cruise fits in a 10-day trip.

Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is operated by Abercrombie & Kent and sells as an inclusive package with guided excursions and entry fees. It has roughly 36 suites, a pool and a well-regarded kitchen. Indicative rates start around USD 500 per person per night as of 2026. Because it is an operator product, it is best booked through the operator or a specialist agent rather than a hotel marketplace. Compare it against Oberoi Philae by what is included, not the headline number.

Mid-Range: Sonesta Nile Goddess and MS Mayfair

Sonesta Nile Goddess is the ship we suggest for families and couples who want a pool, spa and a polished dining room without luxury pricing. Cabins are comfortable rather than huge. Expect from approximately USD 140 per person per night as of 2026, often with full board.

MS Mayfair is a dependable first-time choice: solid food, reliable air conditioning and a sun deck, at from roughly USD 120 per person per night as of 2026. Guide quality on this tier depends on the operator, so read recent reviews.

Budget: Named 4-Star Boats

Budget Nile cruising is perfectly workable if you accept smaller cabins, a buffet-led menu and larger groups. Boats such as MS Aida and Iberotel Luxor sit at about USD 60-90 per person per night as of 2026 on many dates. Check what the rate includes before comparing: some quotes leave out excursions, drinks and entry fees, which can add USD 15-25 per site. Search the live listings on Booking.com Nile cruise deals and filter by review score, not price alone. Avoid unrated boats at very low prices; the cheapest deals are where service and safety standards vary most.

3, 4 or 7 Nights?

  • 3 nights: the quickest option. You see Edfu, Kom Ombo and the main Aswan sites but move at a brisk pace.
  • 4 nights: our recommendation. It adds time at Edfu and Kom Ombo and leaves room for Luxor’s east and west banks at the Luxor end.
  • 7 nights: worth it for slow travel, extra temple days, or combining the Nile with Lake Nasser. Much of the extra time is pacing rather than new sites.

Luxor Start or Aswan Start?

Sailing from Luxor goes upstream and finishes at Aswan, a calm ending with Philae and the Nubian villages. Sailing from Aswan goes downstream and finishes in Luxor with the Valley of the Kings, a bigger finale and an easier flight home to Cairo. Fit the direction to your flights. See our Luxor guide and Aswan guide for the sights at each end.

Nile Cruise and Stay: Add a Land Night

Most itineraries work best with a hotel night at each end. Allow a night in Luxor before an upstream sailing, and a night in Aswan after it. Book ship and hotel dates together so embarkation days line up. Our Nile cruise itinerary has a day-by-day plan.

Add-Ons Worth Booking

  • Sunrise balloon in Luxor: most ships are moored overnight at Luxor, so a dawn flight over the West Bank fits neatly. Book a Luxor hot air balloon ahead in peak season.
  • Private touring: if your ship does not include excursions, browse Luxor tours and Aswan tours for Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Philae and Abu Simbel.

Check current entry requirements and temple opening hours on the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities site before you finalise plans.

What to Check Before Booking Any Ship

  • Cabin position: lower-deck cabins are cheaper but sit closer to the engine and the gangway. A mid-deck cabin on the quieter side of the ship is usually the better trade.
  • Moorings: in Luxor and Esna, ships often moor two or three abreast, so your view and walk to shore can mean crossing other vessels. Smaller luxury ships usually get preferred berths.
  • Group size: boats with 100 or more cabins mean larger excursion groups and busier buffets. Ships under 50 cabins feel very different, which is much of what the luxury price buys.
  • Guiding: ask whether the Egyptologist is included for the whole sailing and whether excursions run in groups or privately.
  • Itinerary timing: some sailings reach Abu Simbel or Philae as optional extras. Confirm which are included and which are paid add-ons.
  • Drinks and tips: drinks are usually extra, and crew tips are normally collected at the end. Ask the operator for the recommended amount in advance.

Booking Timing for 2026/27 and 2027

Peak demand runs from October to February, with the late December holidays the tightest. Small luxury ships can sell their best cabins months ahead, so book Christmas and New Year dates early. Shoulder months such as March, April and late September often give lower rates and thinner crowds, though daytime heat builds from April. If you are planning for 2027, check availability as soon as an operator releases it, then book cabins and flights together so you are not forced into the wrong embarkation city. For month-by-month conditions, see our Egypt in January and Egypt in February guides.

Ship or Dahabiya?

A dahabiya is a traditional sail boat that carries only a handful of cabins and moves more slowly. It suits travellers who value silence and privacy over a pool and spa, and it generally costs more per night for what you get on paper. A conventional cruise ship is better value for first-timers and families who want facilities. Our dahabiya comparison sets out the trade-offs in full.

Which Ship Should We Pick?

  • Honeymoon or milestone trip: Oberoi Philae.
  • Fully inclusive with expert guiding: Sanctuary Sun Boat IV.
  • Families or first-timers wanting a pool: Sonesta Nile Goddess.
  • Balanced value: MS Mayfair.
  • Tightest budget: a well-reviewed 4-star boat, travelling outside peak weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best luxury Nile cruise ship?
Oberoi Philae and Sanctuary Sun Boat IV are the two names most often cited at the top end. Both are small ships with large cabins, butler-style service and strong guiding. Oberoi Philae suits couples who want quiet; Sanctuary Sun Boat IV suits travellers who want a more inclusive, guided package.
Is it better to start a Nile cruise in Luxor or Aswan?
Luxor start sails upstream (south) to Aswan and ends near Abu Simbel and Philae; Aswan start sails north and ends in Luxor, which makes the Valley of the Kings a finale. Both cover the same temples, so choose by flight arrival city and which end you want to spend extra nights in.
How many nights do we need on a Nile cruise?
Three nights covers the main temples at a fast pace, four nights adds a more relaxed Edfu and Kom Ombo, and seven nights usually adds extra Luxor and Aswan days or a Lake Nasser leg. First-timers are usually happiest with four nights.
Do Nile cruise prices include temple entry?
Luxury ships often include guided excursions and entry fees; mid-range and budget ships frequently do not. Always confirm what is in the headline rate, and budget roughly USD 15-25 per major site if entry is extra.
When do Nile cruises for 2027 go on sale?
Most operators open 2027 winter-season availability well ahead. Peak dates (late December and February half-term) sell out first on small luxury ships, so book those several months early.
