Luxor holds the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Hatshepsut Temple, and it is a long desert drive from the Red Sea coast. That makes the Hurghada to Luxor day trip the single most popular excursion sold to beach visitors, and also the one most often booked badly. This page compares the three realistic ways to do it, with current price ranges, pick-up times and an honest view of who should skip it. For the 280 km road itself, bus timetables and independent options, see our Hurghada to Luxor route guide.
The options at a glance
| Option | From (USD, as of 2026) | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared coach tour | from USD 45 per person | 14-16 hours | Budget, first-timers |
| Small-group minibus with Egyptologist | from USD 75 per person | 13-15 hours | Better guiding, fewer crowds |
| Private car and guide | from USD 140 for up to 4 | 12-14 hours, your pace | Families, photographers |
| Overnight in Luxor | from USD 120 per person with hotel | 2 days | Anyone who wants Karnak without rushing |
Prices move with season and fuel costs, so treat these as starting points. Compare current operators and dates on GetYourGuide Hurghada tours or search specific Luxor day trips from Hurghada.
Option 1: Shared coach tour
This is the default. A large air-conditioned coach collects guests from resort hotels, drives in convoy via Safaga and Qena, and reaches Luxor around 10:00 to 10:30.
Pick-up: typically 05:00 to 06:30 for Hurghada city hotels, earlier for El Gouna, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay.
Usual programme: Valley of the Kings (three tombs), Hatshepsut Temple, the Colossi of Memnon photo stop, lunch at a Luxor restaurant, then either Karnak or Luxor Temple, and sometimes an alabaster workshop. Return to Hurghada by 21:00 to 23:00.
Included: return transport, a guide, bottled water and usually lunch. Often excluded: entry fees, the extra ticket for Tutankhamunβs tomb and tips. Read the listing carefully, because a low headline price often means entry is extra.
Trade-offs: convoys and shopping stops eat time. With 6 hours on the ground and 3 to 4 sites, expect to be rushed at Karnak, which alone deserves 90 minutes.
Option 2: Small-group minibus
Minibuses of 8 to 14 people cost roughly 40 to 70 percent more than a coach but usually come with a licensed Egyptologist guide, and they can leave earlier to reach the Valley of the Kings before the tour-bus crowds. If you care about depth, this is the best value of the group options. Our Valley of the Kings guide explains which tombs repay the entry fee.
Option 3: Private car and guide
A private driver and Egyptologist gives you control: leave at 05:00, be at the Valley of the Kings when it opens at 06:00, and skip the shopping stops. A private day typically costs from USD 140 for up to four people (as of 2026), and the per-person price falls quickly with group size. Book transport alone via Kiwitaxi private transfers and hire a guide in Luxor, or buy a packaged private tour from the tours page above. Our Hurghada airport transfer guide covers pricing norms for private cars on the Red Sea coast.
Flying instead of driving
EgyptAir does not appear to fly this route nonstop. Air Cairo is listed with a roughly one-hour nonstop, but only a few departures a week that vary by season, and the time saved is small once check-in and transfers are counted. For most travellers, the road is the realistic option. If you want to cover Egyptβs inland distances by air in general, see our Egypt internal flights guide.
What a typical day looks like
- 05:30 hotel pick-up in Hurghada
- 07:30 comfort stop in Safaga or Qena (convoy checkpoint)
- 10:00 arrive Luxor West Bank, Valley of the Kings
- 11:30 Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon
- 13:00 lunch
- 14:00 Karnak Temple or Luxor Temple
- 15:30 depart Luxor
- 20:30 to 22:30 back at your hotel
Carry Egyptian pounds in cash for tips and tomb extras, a hat, sun cream and a light layer, because the desert road is cold in the early morning in winter.
What we would add: a Karnak evening or an overnight
If you choose to stay, the same trip becomes far more comfortable: late arrival, an evening at Karnakβs sound and light show, the Valley of the Kings at opening time and a balloon flight if you want one. Compare Luxor hotels on Booking.com and see our Luxor itinerary for a two-day plan.
Nile cruise from Hurghada
People searching for a Nile cruise from Hurghada are usually asking about this same road. Cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan, so you reach the ship by road, then sail for 3 to 4 nights. If you have a week or more in Hurghada, a packaged transfer plus a short cruise gives a much better temples experience than a day trip. Our Nile cruise itinerary and dahabiya versus cruise ship comparison explain the choices, and cruise cost guide lists current prices.
Who should skip it
- Children under about 6. The distance and convoy stops make for a very long day.
- Anyone prone to motion sickness. The Safaga to Qena road has long straights but plenty of stop-start traffic.
- People who want to relax. If your Hurghada week is about beach and diving, a 15-hour excursion can wreck a day you paid for.
- Slow walkers in summer. Luxor reaches 40 degrees Celsius or more from May to September, and the West Bank sites are largely shadeless. In that season consider a morning-only private tour or skip it.
- Visitors with only a day for temples. Consider Luxor as an overnight rather than a day trip.
Booking tips
- Check what is included: entry fees, lunch, guide qualification and hotel pick-up.
- Book at least a day ahead from October to April, when popular departures sell out.
- Avoid itineraries that cram in more than four stops.
- Hotel desks commonly add 20 to 40 percent on top of online prices, so compare before paying.
- Confirm the cancellation policy if the weather or security checkpoints disrupt the convoy.
