New Yearβs Eve in Egypt is a choice between three very different parties: a gala on a Nile cruise ship moored at Luxor or Edfu, a Cairo hotel dinner with a Nile or Pyramids view, or a Red Sea beach party with fireworks. All three sell out for 31 December 2026, so booking early matters more than any other planning step. Prices below are approximate and as of 2026; check each venueβs own booking page, because gala menus and prices are usually released in the autumn.
The Three Ways to Celebrate
Nile cruise gala (Luxor-Aswan). Most ships hold a New Yearβs Eve gala dinner with live music, a dance floor and a midnight toast. Operators that run Luxor-Aswan sailings over the holiday include Sonesta Star Goddess, Movenpick Royal Lily and Oberoi Zahra, with a gala supplement of approximately GBP 60-140 per person quoted by agents. Luxor temple galas. Some agents sell a Karnak temple gala for limited groups of around 400 guests, at approximately GBP 220-350 per person excluding hotel and transport. It is the most unusual New Year in Egypt, and the nearest thing to a headline event. Book 3-4 months ahead.
Cairo hotel dinners. The Kempinski Nile Hotel Cairo, Four Seasons Nile Plaza, Conrad Cairo, Fairmont Nile City and Marriott Mena House each publish New Yearβs Eve set menus. One Nile hotel listed a five-course dinner at approximately EGP 4,470 per person including taxes in a recent year. Expect approximately EGP 4,000-8,000 for a gala with live entertainment in 2026.
Red Sea beach galas. Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam resorts hold beach parties with fireworks over the water. Agents advertise four-night all-inclusive stays that include a gala from approximately GBP 530-990 per person, as of 2026. In El Gouna the Abu Tig Marina and the Sheraton Miramar make the nicest evening; in Sharm, Naama Bay is the walkable party zone.

Transport on the Night
- Cairo: traffic is heavy from about 9pm on 31 December. Hotels with transfers or a pre-booked driver are the safest option. Uber and Careem both work but surge; order a ride home before midnight or plan to stay until 1-2am. Our Cairo airport transfer guide covers pre-booking.
- Luxor: Corniche calesche (horse carriages) and taxis cluster along the Corniche. Agree a price before getting in; from approximately EGP 100-250 within the East Bank, as of 2026.
- Resorts: guests are usually inside the property all night, so transport matters only for arrival and departure on 30 December and 1 January. Airports are busiest on 1-2 January, so allow extra time.
- Domestic flights: if you plan to open the year in a different city, book internal flights early, since 1 January flights are heavily booked.
Weather and What to Wear
New Yearβs Eve evenings are cool. Expect approximately 12-14Β°C after dark in Cairo, 9-12Β°C in Luxor and 13-15Β°C on the Red Sea coast. Smart-casual is normal at hotel galas, jackets for men are common in Cairo, and a wrap or light coat is useful for outdoor terraces and deck dinners. Planning Tips
- Decide the mood first: quiet and atmospheric (Nile), elegant (Cairo hotel) or loud (Red Sea).
- Book the room and the gala together where the hotel sells a package, since galas are often compulsory.
- Check what is included: tax and service can add 20-25%, and alcohol is often extra.
- Plan 1 January slowly: sites reopen as usual, but expect hangovers, slow breakfasts and long airport queues. A late-morning start suits the day.
