Where to Stay in El Gouna: Best Hotels and Lagoon Villas

El Gouna is one of Egypt’s most coherently planned resort developments — the entire town was built by a single developer (Orascom, led by Samih Sawiris) from the late 1980s onwards. Every hotel, road, and utility is maintained as part of that development, which means the infrastructure standards here are consistently higher than independently developed Egyptian resort towns. Power cuts, water pressure issues, and inconsistent internet — common complaints in Hurghada — are largely absent.

The trade-off is a certain artificial quality: El Gouna is a resort, not a town. There is no Egyptian street life to discover, no local market, no old city. What it does exceptionally well is provide a comfortable, well-maintained base on a beautiful stretch of Red Sea coast, with one of Egypt’s best-organised systems of lagoons, beaches, and water sports.

Luxury Hotels

Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna — the largest luxury property in El Gouna, set around an 18-hole championship golf course with direct lagoon and beach access. Multiple pools, a full-service spa, six dining outlets, and the full facilities of an international chain hotel. Rooms face either the golf course or the lagoon — lagoon-view rooms command a significant premium and are worth requesting specifically when booking. The dive centre on site operates independently to the hotel. Approximately $200–400/night as of 2026.

Sheraton Miramar Resort El Gouna — occupies its own island within the El Gouna lagoon system, connected to the main town by a short bridge. The island setting provides genuine separation and quiet — quieter than any marina-adjacent property. The architecture follows a Nubian-influenced design with domed roofs and earth tones, which makes it architecturally the most distinctive property in El Gouna. Private beach, lagoon, and full spa facilities. Larger suites have private plunge pools. Approximately $180–320/night as of 2026.

Movenpick Resort & Spa El Gouna — a large established property with direct Red Sea beach access. 557 rooms spread across low-rise buildings; draws a high proportion of repeat guests, which is a reasonable quality signal. Four restaurants, three pools, a dedicated dive centre. The consistency typical of Movenpick properties applies here — reliable rather than exceptional. Approximately $180–350/night as of 2026.

Mid-Range and Boutique

Dawar El Omda (Abu Tig Marina) — the most characterful accommodation option in El Gouna. A boutique hotel designed in traditional Egyptian style with a central courtyard pool and rooftop terrace overlooking the marina. Significantly smaller than the resort properties — fewer facilities but better atmosphere. The location at the marina puts you within walking distance of the town’s best restaurants and the social hub of El Gouna. Suited to independent travellers who want character over amenities. Approximately $100–180/night as of 2026.

Club Med El Gouna — an all-inclusive format on the beachfront, working well for families with children or those who prefer a single price covering meals, activities (sailing, windsurfing, tennis), and entertainment. The children’s club is one of the more comprehensive in El Gouna. The beach maintained by Club Med is among the better stretches in town. Approximately $150–280/night for two, all-inclusive, as of 2026.

Three Corners Ocean View Hotel — mid-range lagoon property popular with European package visitors. Rooms are functional rather than memorable, but the location and pool are solid for the price point. Better suited to guests who plan to spend most of their time on the water or at diving rather than in the hotel. Approximately $80–150/night as of 2026.

Sultan Bey Beach Hotel — a smaller property close to the beach with an unpretentious approach. Fewer facilities than the chain hotels but a warmer guest experience reported by repeat visitors. Useful for divers who want proximity to the beach dive sites without paying chain hotel rates. Approximately $70–130/night as of 2026.

Self-Catering and Long-Stay Apartments

El Gouna has a well-developed serviced apartment market aimed at longer-stay visitors, remote workers, and repeat guests who want kitchen access. This is the most cost-effective option for stays of a week or more.

Abu Tig Marina apartments — studios and one-bedroom apartments in the marina area, available through letting agencies and platforms including Airbnb. The marina location gives walking-distance access to restaurants, a small supermarket, pharmacies, and the water taxi stop. Rates from approximately $70–120/night depending on size and season, dropping significantly on monthly stays — often $1,200–1,800/month for a furnished studio as of 2026.

Lagoon-view apartments — several residential complexes in the lagoon zone rent short-term. These offer private pools or shared pool access and more space than hotel rooms, with the quieter lagoon-facing ambience rather than beach-club energy. A good option for couples or small groups who want space and a kitchen.

Choosing Between El Gouna and Hurghada

Choose El Gouna if: you prioritise consistent infrastructure, quieter beaches, better-maintained water sports facilities, a marina with good restaurants, and are comfortable paying a 30–50% premium over Hurghada.

Choose Hurghada if: you need a broader range of budget options, want more variety in dining and nightlife, or prefer a genuine Egyptian town atmosphere alongside the resort experience.

El Gouna’s internet infrastructure deserves mention specifically for remote workers — the fibre connectivity in the marina area is among the most reliable on the Egyptian Red Sea coast, and several marina cafes have Wi-Fi suitable for video calls. Co-working spaces have opened in the Abu Tig area in recent years.

When to Book

High season is October to April, with peak pricing around Christmas and New Year (December 20 to January 5 in particular) and European school holidays. Summer (June–August) is very hot — daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C — and prices drop by 30–40%. The shoulder months of May and September offer a reasonable compromise.

For the Steigenberger and Sheraton Miramar specifically, book at least 4–6 weeks ahead during high season. Dawar El Omda is the smallest property and fills earliest — 6–8 weeks ahead is advisable in peak periods.

See our El Gouna guide for what to do once you are there. Tours and activities in El Gouna — including reef snorkelling, kite surfing, and desert excursions — can be booked through marina operators or in advance online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is El Gouna worth it compared to Hurghada?
El Gouna is 30–50% more expensive than equivalent Hurghada accommodation, but the planned infrastructure is noticeably more reliable — consistent power, water, and internet. The beaches and lagoon are better maintained, and the absence of aggressive street hassle is a real advantage. Worth it for most travellers who can afford the premium.
Which area of El Gouna is best to stay in?
The marina (Abu Tig) suits independent travellers who want to eat out and walk around. The beach resort zone is better for families and guests who plan to spend most of their time at the pool or on the beach. Water taxis and TukTuks connect both areas easily.
Can you stay in El Gouna without a car?
Yes. TukTuks (small electric vehicles) cover the entire town for approximately EGP 30–50 per trip as of 2026. Water taxis run between marina and beach zones every 20 minutes during daylight hours. A hire car is not necessary for staying within El Gouna, though it is useful if you want to explore Hurghada or the surrounding coast.
