Egypt in May: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
May marks the start of Egypt’s hot season. The comfortable touring weather of winter is over, and the country splits into two distinct propositions: the Red Sea coast, which is excellent, and everything else, which demands careful scheduling around the heat. Crowds thin out significantly, pricing drops, and those willing to work around the temperature are rewarded with quieter sites and better value.
Weather Across Egypt in May
Cairo and the Delta: Daytime highs of 33–38°C, overnight lows of 19–22°C. The Giza Plateau is exposed and shadeless — visiting after 10am means contending with fierce direct sun. Khamsin winds are still possible in early May, adding dust and additional heat.
Luxor and Aswan: Genuinely hot. Luxor averages 38–42°C by day, Aswan 39–43°C. The Valley of the Kings, set in an enclosed limestone valley, regularly exceeds the ambient temperature. Inside the tombs it is cooler, but the walk between them is demanding. Only visit between 6am and 9am.
Red Sea coast: Air temperatures of 30–34°C, water at 25–26°C. The sea is warm enough for diving without any wetsuit. Visibility remains strong at 20–25m. Wind moderates compared to March–April, making conditions calmer for snorkelling.
Alexandria: Warmer than winter at 26–30°C, with occasional humidity from the Mediterranean. More comfortable than Cairo for sightseeing but not as pleasant as the October–March period.
Crowds and Pricing
May is firmly low season for Egypt’s archaeological circuit. Visitor numbers at Giza, Luxor, and Aswan drop substantially. The Pyramids in the early morning can feel almost private — a stark contrast to the queues of November.
Hotel pricing reflects the low demand. Mid-range Cairo hotels average 1,800–3,500 EGP per night — some of the lowest rates of the year. Red Sea all-inclusive resorts run 2,500–5,000 EGP per night. Nile cruise boats offer significant discounts, though the experience is less comfortable in the heat.
Festivals and Events
Eid al-Fitr (variable — end of Ramadan): When Eid al-Fitr falls in May, Egypt celebrates with 3–4 days of public holidays. Shops and restaurants reopen fully after Ramadan, and the streets fill with families celebrating. Tourist sites can be busy with domestic visitors during Eid — the Pyramids and Cairo parks see large Egyptian family crowds. Hotels in Alexandria and the North Coast fill up as Egyptian families take short holidays.
Labour Day (1 May): A public holiday. Government offices close but tourist sites remain open. Some museums may have reduced hours.
What to Do in May
- Red Sea diving and snorkelling: May is one of the best months for underwater conditions. Warm water, good visibility, and fewer boats at popular sites. Marsa Alam’s southern reefs see dolphins and dugongs regularly in May
- Dawn visits to the Pyramids: If you are in Cairo, arrive at the Giza complex at opening time (8am). You have roughly 90 minutes of comfortable conditions before the heat becomes oppressive. Saqqara and Dahshur are equally impressive and even less crowded
- Dahab on a budget: Dahab in May is hot (32–36°C) but the town’s relaxed pace suits it — morning dives, afternoon rest, evening seafront dining. Accommodation rates are at their lowest
- Egyptian Museum evenings: Cairo’s museums are air-conditioned and make excellent afternoon refuges. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization are both best enjoyed without the peak-season crowds

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is May a good time to visit Egypt?
- May is good for the Red Sea coast — hot and sunny, warm water, and fewer tourists than peak winter months. For archaeological sites (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan), early morning visits are essential as midday heat (35–40°C) makes extensive walking uncomfortable.
- How hot is Egypt in May?
- May averages 35–40°C in Cairo and 38–42°C in Luxor. It is the beginning of the hot season. Start all site visits before 9am and return to air-conditioning by noon.
- Is the Red Sea better in May or October?
- Both are excellent for the Red Sea. October is slightly cooler and has very few crowds. May is warmer and has good visibility but summer tourists begin arriving. October is generally preferred for those primarily visiting for diving.
