Egypt in June: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
June is deep into Egypt’s hot season. The archaeological sites of Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan are punishingly hot during the day, and we would not recommend a first-time Egypt visit in June for anyone primarily interested in temples and tombs. The Red Sea coast, however, is a different story — warm water, excellent diving conditions, and low-season pricing make it a strong option for a beach and diving holiday.
Weather Across Egypt in June
Cairo and the Delta: Daytime highs of 35–40°C, overnight lows of 22–25°C. Humidity is low, which makes the heat feel slightly less oppressive than similar temperatures in humid climates, but direct sun exposure at Giza or Saqqara is harsh. There is virtually no rain.
Luxor and Aswan: Extreme heat. Luxor averages 40–44°C, Aswan 41–45°C. These are among the hottest inhabited places on Earth in June. The Valley of the Kings is a furnace. Only visit if you are fully acclimatised and prepared for very early starts (6–7am).
Red Sea coast: Air temperatures of 33–37°C, water at 26–27°C. Sea breezes moderate the heat along the coast. Diving conditions are excellent — warm water means no wetsuit needed, and visibility of 20–30m is common. Dahab benefits from a consistent breeze that makes the heat more bearable than Hurghada.
Alexandria: Mediterranean influence keeps temperatures at 28–32°C — noticeably cooler than Cairo. June is when Egyptian domestic visitors begin arriving for summer holidays, making Alexandria increasingly busy through the month.
Crowds and Pricing
Foreign tourist numbers are at their lowest in June. The Pyramids of Giza, normally thronged with tour buses, can feel remarkably quiet in the early morning. The Valley of the Kings may have only a handful of visitors at opening time.
This translates directly to pricing. Mid-range Cairo hotels average 1,500–3,000 EGP per night — often half the November rate. Red Sea all-inclusive resorts run 2,200–4,500 EGP per night, though prices begin rising in late June as European summer holiday bookings arrive. Nile cruises are heavily discounted but the onboard experience is compromised by the heat — deck time is limited to early morning and late evening.
Festivals and Events
Eid al-Adha (variable — Islamic lunar calendar): When Eid al-Adha falls in June, it brings 4–5 days of public holidays. This is one of Islam’s most significant celebrations. Domestic travel surges — Alexandria, the North Coast, and Red Sea resorts fill with Egyptian families. Some shops and restaurants may close on the first day. Tourist sites remain open but can be crowded with domestic visitors.
Start of Egyptian school holidays: Egyptian schools break for summer in mid-June. The North Coast (Sahel, Marina, Alamein) and Alexandria see a major influx of Egyptian families from mid-June through August. Red Sea resorts also begin receiving more domestic tourists.
What to Do in June
- Red Sea diving: June offers some of the year’s best diving conditions. The Brothers Islands, Elphinstone Reef (Marsa Alam), and Ras Mohammed (Sharm) all benefit from warm, clear water. Liveaboard boats are available at lower prices than winter
- Dahab budget diving: Dahab’s backpacker infrastructure makes it the cheapest Red Sea dive base. June rates for accommodation and dive packages are at their lowest. The Blue Hole and Canyon are accessible from shore
- Air-conditioned Cairo: If you are transiting through Cairo, focus on museums (the Grand Egyptian Museum, Egyptian Museum, Coptic Museum) and indoor markets. Khan el-Khalili is best visited after 7pm when temperatures drop
- North Coast beaches: Egyptians head to the Mediterranean beaches between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh. El Alamein and Sahel have resort complexes that cater primarily to the domestic market — a different experience from the tourist trail

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is June too hot to visit Egypt?
- June is very hot — Cairo averages 37–40°C and Luxor can reach 43–45°C. Extensive archaeological touring is uncomfortable and potentially dangerous in midday heat. The Red Sea coast (Hurghada, Sharm, Dahab) is the better choice in June — hot but with sea breezes.
- Is Egypt cheap in June?
- June is shoulder season for the Red Sea resorts — prices are lower than peak winter months. Accommodation in Cairo and Luxor is also lower. Budget travellers who plan carefully can find excellent value in June.
- Is Dahab good in June?
- Dahab in June is hot (33–36°C) but the town's elevation and sea breeze make it more bearable than Luxor or Cairo. It's a popular month for budget divers — water visibility is excellent and the town is quiet.
