Egypt in April: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect
April is a turning point in Egypt’s calendar. The comfortable winter touring season is ending, heat builds steadily through the month, and Easter (when it falls in April) brings the last major wave of European visitors before summer. The Red Sea coast is at its best, while archaeological sites remain doable with early starts and midday breaks.
Weather Across Egypt in April
Cairo and the Delta: Daytime highs of 28–33°C, overnight lows of 15–18°C. The afternoons are hot — the Giza Plateau has no shade and direct sun at midday is intense. Morning visits (arriving at opening time, 8am) are strongly recommended. Khamsin wind episodes continue through April.
Luxor and Aswan: Properly hot. Luxor averages 33–38°C by day, Aswan 34–39°C. The Valley of the Kings — enclosed in a limestone valley that traps heat — can feel significantly hotter than the ambient temperature. Visit before 10am or after 4pm.
Red Sea coast: Air temperatures of 26–30°C, water at 24–25°C. April is one of the best months for the Red Sea — warm enough for comfortable diving without a wetsuit, excellent visibility (20–30m), and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.
Sinai: Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh are warm (28–32°C) with consistent sea breezes making the heat manageable. Inland Sinai hiking becomes uncomfortable by late April.
Crowds and Pricing
Easter is the dominant factor. When Easter falls in April, the first two weeks see a significant spike in European visitors — Giza, Luxor, and the Nile cruise boats are at their busiest since November. Post-Easter, crowds drop quickly.
Mid-range Cairo hotels average 3,000–5,500 EGP per night during Easter week, dropping to 2,200–4,000 EGP afterwards. Red Sea all-inclusive resorts run 3,500–7,000 EGP during Easter and 2,800–5,000 EGP in late April. Post-Easter April offers some of the best value of the year — good weather, low crowds, moderate pricing.
Festivals and Events
Sham el-Nessim (day after Coptic Easter): If Easter falls in April, Sham el-Nessim — Egypt’s spring festival — brings the country outdoors. Parks along the Nile in Cairo fill with families eating fesikh, onions, and coloured eggs. It is one of Egypt’s most distinctive cultural experiences and predates Islam and Christianity, tracing its roots to ancient Egyptian celebrations of spring.
Ramadan (variable — Islamic lunar calendar): When Ramadan falls in April, the atmosphere changes significantly. Many restaurants close during daylight hours, though hotels and tourist-focused venues continue to serve meals. After iftar (sunset meal), streets come alive — particularly Khan el-Khalili in Cairo, where lanterns, music, and food stalls create a remarkable atmosphere that is worth experiencing. Visiting Egypt during Ramadan requires some adjustment but offers a window into daily Egyptian life that peak-season visits miss.
What to Do in April
- Red Sea diving: April conditions are outstanding. Water temperature suits thin wetsuits or rashguards only. Top sites include Ras Mohammed National Park, the Thistlegorm wreck, and the Blue Hole at Dahab
- Early-morning pyramids: Arrive at Giza at 8am sharp and you can cover the main complex before the worst heat. The Saqqara and Dahshur pyramids south of Cairo are less crowded than Giza and equally impressive
- Nile cruises (with caveats): Still possible in April, but deck time during midday becomes uncomfortably hot. Choose boats with good sun shade and pool access
- Khan el-Khalili evenings: Cairo’s historic market district is best visited in the late afternoon and evening in April — cooler temperatures and better atmosphere for browsing
