The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened fully in November 2023 near the Giza plateau, approximately 2km from the Great Pyramid. At 100,000 square metres of total area, it is the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. The headline draw is the complete Tutankhamun collection — 5,000+ objects from his tomb, displayed together for the first time since Howard Carter excavated them in 1922. Until GEM opened, parts of the collection were in storage for decades.

If you are planning a Cairo trip and have one dedicated museum day, this is where to spend it. The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir remains worth visiting for its 1902 building and the collections not yet transferred to Giza — but GEM is the defining Egypt museum experience now.

The Tutankhamun Royal Hall

This is the reason most international visitors come to GEM specifically. Gallery 44 — the Tutankhamun Royal Hall — holds objects from KV62, the Valley of the Kings tomb discovered by Howard Carter on 4 November 1922. The collection includes:

  • The golden burial mask (weighing approximately 11kg, made of solid gold with lapis lazuli and coloured glass)
  • All four golden shrines that enclosed the sarcophagus
  • Canopic chest and miniature coffins
  • Gilded throne, chariots, and ceremonial furniture
  • Over 5,000 individual objects in total

The objects are displayed in a purpose-built hall with controlled lighting and climate. Signage is in Arabic and English; audio guides are available for hire at the entrance (approximately EGP 100–150 as of 2026). The scale of the collection in one location is genuinely impressive — previous displays at Tahrir showed perhaps a quarter of this.

Booking note: The Tutankhamun Royal Hall requires a specific ticket tier at GEM — confirm you have the right package when purchasing. Some general admission tickets cover the main atrium and permanent galleries but not the Tutankhamun hall specifically.

The Grand Staircase and Permanent Galleries

The main entrance atrium centres on a 25-metre-tall statue of Ramesses II — moved from its former position in central Cairo, where it stood outside Ramses Station. The statue is visible from most of the atrium and is the canonical photo stop.

The permanent galleries are arranged chronologically, starting from the Pre-Dynastic period and moving through to the Graeco-Roman era. Notable sections:

Old Kingdom Gallery: Statuary from the pyramid-building period, including objects from the pyramid complexes at Saqqara and Dahshur. The Old Kingdom carved reliefs and decorative objects here are exceptional — less famous than the Tutankhamun material but among the finest ancient carving anywhere.

New Kingdom Gallery: Military objects, royal statuary, and domestic items from Egypt’s imperial period (roughly 1550–1069 BC). Includes items related to Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and the Ramesside pharaohs.

Jewellery Gallery: Dedicated display of gold, faience, and gemstone objects. The jewellery of Kha and Merit — an 18th Dynasty couple — and the golden flies of valour are among the highlights that rarely get the attention the Tutankhamun material does.

Practical Logistics

Hours: Open daily. General hours are approximately 9:00am–5:00pm with last entry 4:00pm, though the museum has extended evening hours on certain dates. Check gem.gov.eg for current times — hours are adjusted seasonally and for public holidays.

Entry fees (as of 2026):

  • General admission (main galleries, Grand Atrium, Staircase): approximately EGP 1,000–1,200 (~$20–25)
  • Full package (GEM + Tutankhamun Royal Hall + Children’s Museum): approximately EGP 1,800–2,200 (~$37–45)
  • These figures are approximate and subject to periodic adjustment. Verify current pricing at gem.gov.eg before your visit.

Photography: Personal photography is permitted in most areas without a flash. Tripods are not allowed. Some galleries have photography restrictions — look for posted signs.

Cafes and facilities: Two food areas inside the museum, plus a restaurant with views toward the pyramid plateau. The Giza pyramid views from certain parts of the museum complex are exceptional, particularly in late afternoon.

Getting There from Cairo

GEM sits at the edge of the Giza plateau, roughly 35km southwest of central Cairo. Options:

Uber / Careem: The most reliable independent option. From central Cairo (Tahrir, Downtown), expect EGP 150–250 depending on traffic, around 45–75 minutes. Rush hour from central Cairo adds significantly — morning trips before 8am are faster.

Guided tour: The majority of visitors combine GEM with a Giza pyramids visit. This is efficient if you have not seen the pyramids yet. Tour operators include companies operating from central Cairo hotels; day tours typically run $40–80 per person including transport, guide, and GEM entry.

From the Giza pyramids: GEM is walkable from the pyramids’ main entrance — approximately 20 minutes on foot along an established path. If you are spending a morning at the pyramids and want to visit GEM in the afternoon, this is a practical combination.

GEM vs Egyptian Museum at Tahrir: Which to Choose

If you can only visit one: GEM for the Tutankhamun collection. The complete display of KV62 objects is a once-in-a-generation museum moment that did not exist before 2023.

If you have two museum days: visit both. The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir retains a vast collection, its 1902 building has character that GEM’s modern architecture lacks, and certain objects — particularly from lesser-documented tomb assemblages — have not yet transferred to Giza. The transfer was still in progress as of 2026.

Combining GEM with Cairo Sightseeing

GEM fits naturally into two itinerary patterns for Cairo visitors:

GEM + Giza day: Start at the pyramids early (gate opens 8:00am), spend the morning on the plateau, cross to GEM by early afternoon, use the remaining daylight at the museum. This is a long day — allow 7–8 hours total.

GEM as a standalone day: This is the better option for anyone who wants to engage properly with the Tutankhamun galleries. Arrive at GEM at 9:00am, take the full collection seriously, use the on-site restaurant for lunch, leave by 4:00pm. The Cairo city hub has suggestions for where to eat in the evening if you are based in Giza or heading back to central Cairo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Grand Egyptian Museum tickets cost?
As of 2026, ticket options vary by package. General admission with access to the main galleries runs approximately EGP 1,000–1,200 ($20–25). A full package that includes the Tutankhamun Royal Hall and the Children's Museum costs more. Timed-entry tickets are sold online and at the entrance — online booking via the official GEM website (gem.gov.eg) or Tiqets is strongly recommended to avoid long queues.
How long does the Grand Egyptian Museum take to visit?
Plan for at least 4–5 hours for a proper visit. The museum covers 100,000 square metres. The Tutankhamun galleries alone warrant 1.5–2 hours. Many visitors find they could spend a full day. If you are combining GEM with the Giza pyramids in one day, expect to feel rushed at both — they are best done on separate days.
What is the difference between GEM and the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir?
The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir (1902) holds 120,000+ objects with a broad collection and historic building. GEM (2023) is the world's largest archaeological museum, built primarily to display Tutankhamun's complete treasures — 5,000+ objects — for the first time in their entirety. The Tutankhamun collection was the Tahrir museum's centrepiece for decades; GEM now holds those objects. Visiting both is worthwhile — see our guide to the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir for what remains there.
Do I need to book Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in advance?
Yes. GEM is consistently among the most-visited attractions in Egypt, and peak-period queues for walk-up tickets can exceed two hours. Timed-entry tickets bought online guarantee your entry slot. Book at least 2–3 days ahead in high season (October–March), longer during Egyptian and European school holidays.
How do I get from Cairo to the Grand Egyptian Museum?
GEM is approximately 35km from central Cairo, near the Giza pyramid plateau. By Uber or Careem: approximately EGP 150–300 depending on Cairo traffic (45–90 minutes, significantly longer during rush hour). By tour: most Cairo day tours now include GEM. There is no dedicated public metro connection as of 2026 — ride-hailing or a booked tour is the practical option for most visitors.
