The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at Giza is now drawing up to 19,000 visitors per day, making it Egypt’s highest-traffic tourist attraction since its full opening in November 2025. The milestone comes as Egypt’s tourism authority reports record first-half arrivals of 6.1 million international visitors for H1 2026.

About the Museum

The GEM holds over 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts, including the complete treasures of Tutankhamun β€” the only time the full collection has been displayed together in one location. The museum was decades in planning and cost an estimated $1 billion to build. It sits at the foot of the Giza Plateau, approximately two kilometres from the Great Pyramid, with direct sightlines to the pyramids from its main terrace.

Key galleries cover the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms, with rooms dedicated to mummification, funerary practices, royal regalia, and daily life in ancient Egypt. The Tutankhamun collection alone spans a dedicated 7,000-square-metre gallery.

What the Visitor Numbers Mean

Reaching 19,000 visitors per day puts the GEM among the most visited museums in the region. By comparison, the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo β€” which held the Tutankhamun collection before the transfer β€” averaged around 3,000 to 5,000 visitors daily in recent years.

The high daily volume means queuing is common, particularly on weekends and during peak tourist months (October to April). Pre-booking tickets online significantly reduces waiting time at the entrance.

Getting There

The museum is located near the Giza Pyramids on Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road. It is not reachable by Cairo Metro directly; most visitors arrive by taxi, private transfer, or tour shuttle from central Cairo. Journey times from downtown Cairo run approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.

Our Grand Egyptian Museum history guide covers the major exhibitions in detail. For planning a visit to Cairo more broadly, the Cairo city guide covers neighbourhoods, transport, and practicalities. Ticket prices and pre-booking instructions are available on the museum’s official website. We recommend booking at least several days in advance during high season.
