Cairo is the destination most Sharm el-Sheikh visitors ask about, because the pyramids are the reason many of them came to Egypt in the first place. A day return by air is possible, and so is a coach-based tour, but the two are very different experiences. This page compares both, plus private options, with prices, pick-up times and an honest list of who should skip it. For the other excursions from the resort, see our Sharm el-Sheikh day trips guide.
The options at a glance

| Private tour with flights | from USD 400 for two | 7-8 hours, flexible | Families, privacy |

By air: the realistic way
EgyptAir and Air Cairo operate scheduled flights between Sharm el-Sheikh and Cairo, and the flight takes around 45 to 55 minutes. Tour operators bundle the flights with a guide, transfers and entry fees.
Pick-up times: expect hotel pick-up between 03:30 and 05:00 for a morning departure. Allow a couple of hours at the airport on domestic flights with security checks.
A typical day:
- 04:30 hotel pick-up, Sharm airport
- 07:00 land in Cairo, meet guide
- 08:30 Giza Plateau: pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx
- 12:30 lunch
- 14:00 the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square
- 17:30 airport
- 20:00 to 22:00 back in Sharm
Included: flights, guide, transfers, Giza Plateau entry and lunch on most packages. Usually extra: entering inside a pyramid (several hundred Egyptian pounds as of 2026), the Grand Egyptian Museum ticket on some listings, and tips.
You can add a camel ride at Giza to the day if your guide has time. Read our Giza camel ride guide for fair-price and scam-avoidance notes before agreeing a price at the plateau.
By coach: only as a transfer
The road from Sharm el-Sheikh to Cairo crosses the Sinai Peninsula and the Suez Canal via the Ahmed Hamdi tunnel, roughly 500 km in total, and takes about 7 to 9 hours each way depending on checkpoints and traffic. A same-day return means roughly 15 hours of driving, leaving you with a rushed few hours at the pyramids and nothing else. Coach tours are sold from about USD 80, but we recommend them only as a one-way transfer with a night in Cairo. If you want to cover the distance independently, our getting around Egypt guide lists bus operators and what to expect.
Private car
A private car from Sharm to Cairo is a long way and a significant price, and it makes more sense if you are leaving Sharm for good. Book a private Kiwitaxi transfer for a one-way journey with an overnight in Cairo, or use the flight and a private Cairo guide for the day. See our Cairo airport transfer guide for pricing norms in the capital.
Making it a night, not a day
The best fix for the Sharm to Cairo day trip is to turn it into two days. Fly out on the first morning, see Giza in the afternoon light, stay in Cairo, and spend the second morning at the museum before your evening flight. Our 3 days in Cairo itinerary shows how to sequence it, and our best tours in Cairo page lists operators for guides and private drivers.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who dislikes very early starts. A 04:00 pick-up and 22:00 return is a 17-hour day.
- Families with young children. The combination of flights, heat and queues is hard on small children.
- Travellers who want Cairoβs atmosphere. A day trip shows Giza and one museum. The old city, Khan el-Khalili and Coptic Cairo need another day.
- People who want a quiet Sharm break. The trip costs a full day of your holiday and a significant sum.
- Summer visitors. Giza has almost no shade, and temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius from June to September. October to April is more comfortable.
Booking tips
- Book at least 48 hours ahead; flights fill during peak season.
- Confirm whether the tour includes the Grand Egyptian Museum ticket, pyramid interior entry and lunch.
- Carry your passport in your hand luggage.
- Pick a tour that returns on an evening flight with a buffer, not the last departure.
- Pay by card on a reputable platform and avoid hotel desks that mark up 25 to 40 percent.
If Cairo is not for you, Sharm has strong alternatives: Ras Mohammed, the Blue Hole and a St Catherineβs sunrise. See best tours in Sharm el-Sheikh for the full list, and our Giza Pyramids history guide for what you will see on the day.
