Abu Simbel's Autumn Sun Festival: What to Expect on 22 October 2026

The colossal statues of Ramses II at the Abu Simbel temples at dawn

Twice a year, the sun does something remarkable inside the Great Temple of Abu Simbel: its rays travel the full 65-metre length of the sanctuary to illuminate three of the four seated statues at the far end. The 2026 autumn occurrence falls on 22 October. If you’re planning an Egypt trip with Upper Nile in mind, this is the event to frame your dates around.

What Happens and Why

The phenomenon is the result of deliberate ancient engineering. When Ramses II commissioned the temple around 1264 BCE, its axis was positioned so that on two specific days of the year β€” his birthday (around 22 October) and the anniversary of his coronation (around 22 February) β€” the rising sun would penetrate the inner sanctuary at the moment of dawn.

At that point, three of the four statues at the back wall β€” Ramses himself flanked by the gods Amun and Ra-Horakhty β€” are bathed in sunlight for roughly 20 minutes. The fourth statue, Ptah, the god of the underworld, remains permanently in shadow, which is thought to be intentional.

Visiting on the Day

The doors at Abu Simbel open before dawn, and the solar alignment begins at approximately 05:55 local time. The inner sanctuary becomes packed quickly. Visitors who want to see the illumination from inside the inner chamber typically need to position themselves early β€” arriving with a tour group the previous afternoon and staying overnight at Abu Simbel village is the most reliable way to get a good viewing position.

Day trippers from Aswan by road or a morning flight on Egypt Air’s Abu Simbel shuttle service (roughly 45 minutes) can reach the site, but will be competing with the day-tour crowd and may not gain access to the inner hall at the moment of alignment. For the festival date, booking Abu Simbel tours well in advance is strongly recommended β€” guided packages that bundle transport and entry typically sell out weeks before 22 October.

The Wider Festival Atmosphere

The festival has grown beyond the astronomical event itself. The surrounding area fills with light shows, folk performances, and live music in the days around 22 October. Hotels in Abu Simbel and Aswan fill early; we recommend booking at least 6–8 weeks ahead for dates from 19–24 October, as both accommodation options in the village and flights fill to capacity. Daytime highs in the area sit around 32Β°C in late October, making it one of the more comfortable months to be this far south.

Getting There

Most travellers base themselves in Aswan and take the flight or an early-morning overland transfer (approximately 3.5 hours by road). The road crosses the Sahara via the Lake Nasser shoreline and passes through dramatic desert scenery. Alternatively, a felucca ride on the Nile from Aswan can be paired as a full southern Upper Egypt itinerary β€” several operators offer multi-day packages that combine Aswan’s temples, Philae Island, and an Abu Simbel extension.

The festival date is confirmed for 2026. Unlike peak summer, October’s lower temperatures and better light make this a sensible month to visit the south of Egypt independently.
