Aswanβs section of the Nile is the most beautiful in Egypt. Granite boulders rise from the river in clusters, islands covered in palms and ancient temples sit at mid-channel, and the Nubian shoreline glows in late afternoon light. A felucca ride here, drifting between Elephantine Island and the east bank with the Corniche visible behind, is the most unhurried way to see the city from the water.
Feluccas are traditional wooden sailboats that have worked the Nile for thousands of years. At Aswan, they are still used daily by locals and short-stay visitors. This page covers the main trip options, what is included, and practical notes.
The Main Felucca Experiences
You can browse Aswan felucca rides and Nile sailing trips on GetYourGuide to compare private charters, sunset departures, and island-landing packages with verified reviews.
2-Hour Felucca Ride from Aswan (Klook Activity 139364)
The most popular booked option. This sunset-oriented departure leaves from the Aswan Corniche waterfront and covers the central island circuit: past Elephantine Island, around Kitchenerβs Island, and back along the west bank. The route takes in the river landscape without landing on any island.
What is included:
- Private felucca (or small group, depending on booking type)
- Experienced captain who narrates key sites in English
- Hotel transfer in some packages; self-arrival available at Corniche
Duration: 2 hours. Departure times vary by season but are typically late afternoon for the sunset angle over the river. Price approximately $15-22 USD per person as of 2026.

The private charter option: the whole boat (capacity 8-10) for 1.5-2 hours. Best suited for families, small groups, or couples wanting a quieter experience. Departure is timed for the 30-45 minutes before sunset, when the Nile turns gold and the eastern bank catches the last light. The captain adjusts the route on request.
Price approximately $65-85 for the boat, regardless of passenger count (effectively $8-10 USD per person in a group of 8).

Aswan Botanical Garden and Felucca Ride (Klook Activity 135022)
A combined package visiting Kitchenerβs Island Botanical Garden (planted by British general Herbert Kitchener in the 1890s, now containing exotic trees from across Africa and Asia) followed by a felucca circuit on the Nile. Good option for first-time visitors who want the island experience alongside the boat ride.

What to Expect on the Water
Wind: Feluccas are sail-only β no engine. The Nile at Aswan has consistent north-to-south winds for most of the year, which is why felucca travel heading upstream (south to Luxor) is actually against the prevailing current but with the wind. On a 2-hour Aswan circuit, the captain will tack as needed; short spells of paddling or drifting are normal when wind drops.
Seating: Feluccas have cushioned benches running along each side of the hull and sometimes a central mattress section for relaxing flat. There are no private cabins or facilities on short-trip feluccas. Bring your own water and snacks.
Swimming: Some captains will stop at a sand bank on request for a short swim. This is not typically part of booked tour packages unless specified.
Best Season
October through March is ideal for felucca rides at Aswan. Temperatures are between 18Β°C and 28Β°C, winds are reliable, and the afternoon light on the granite islands is exceptional. This is also peak season, so expect more boat traffic on the river.
April and May are warm and pleasant. June through September sees daytime temperatures exceeding 40Β°C in Aswan β if visiting in summer, book early morning or sunset departures only, carry water, and avoid midday.
What the River Shows You
Elephantine Island: The oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Egypt, dating back over 5,000 years. The Nilometer on the south tip was used to measure annual flood levels and assess likely harvest yields β visible from the water as a stone shaft descending into the river.
Kitchenerβs Island (Jazirat al-Nabatat): A garden island where exotic species from tropical Africa and the Indian subcontinent were planted in the 19th century. Entry costs approximately 50 EGP as of 2026. Accessible by small rowboat from the Aswan Corniche or included in some felucca tour packages.
Nubian Villages on the West Bank: The pastel-painted houses of the Nubian communities are visible from the felucca as it crosses toward the western shore. Some full-day packages include a village stop with tea.
Old Cataract Hotel: Built in 1899, visible from the water on the south end of the Corniche. Agatha Christie wrote parts of βDeath on the Nileβ here.
Getting to the Aswan Corniche
The main felucca departure point is the Aswan Corniche waterfront, running along the east bank of the Nile through the town centre. Most hotels in Aswan are within walking distance. If booking online, pickup from your hotel is usually available.
Aswan is connected to Luxor by train (approximately 3 hours, from 50 EGP for second class) and by Nile cruise ships. The domestic airport serves Cairo (approximately 1.5 hours by air). For a broader look at guided activities in the area, GetYourGuide lists Aswan day tours covering the Philae Temple, High Dam, and Nubian village visits alongside the felucca experiences.
