Siwa’s remoteness is part of its character — getting here takes commitment. There is no airport, no train, and no casual route. The payoff for the effort is an oasis that remains substantially unhurried and uncrowded outside of its festival peak. Here is what you need to know.
By Bus from Cairo
The West Delta Bus Company is the standard route. Buses depart from Cairo’s Turgoman Bus Terminal (also called Cairo Gateway Station) with early morning and sometimes evening departures. The journey takes approximately 8 hours across the Western Desert — air-conditioned, reasonably comfortable, and the most affordable way to get here. Tickets can be booked online via the West Delta website or purchased at the terminal.
The bus arrives in Siwa town. From the drop-off point, the main guesthouses are a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away. If you’ve booked accommodation in the palm groves or at Adrère Amellal, arrange a pick-up in advance.
By Bus from Alexandria
West Delta also serves the Alexandria–Siwa route, taking approximately 5–6 hours via Marsa Matruh on the Mediterranean coast. This is a useful option if you’re combining Siwa with Egypt’s northern coast. The route passes through some unremarkable coastal landscape before turning south into the desert.
Via Marsa Matruh
Marsa Matruh, 300km north of Siwa, is the nearest town with a wider range of facilities. Some travellers break the journey here overnight. From Marsa Matruh, shared service taxis and local buses cover the remaining leg to Siwa. This adds flexibility if you want to make the journey in stages.
By Car from Cairo
The drive from Cairo to Siwa covers approximately 560km on sealed roads and takes around 6 hours in normal conditions. The road passes through the northern oasis region — there are petrol stations at Bahariya Oasis and in Marsa Matruh, but fewer reliable options in between. Carry extra fuel and water if driving independently. Do not attempt any off-road desert tracks without adequate preparation, a navigation plan, and a second vehicle.
The drive is straightforward and the desert scenery is interesting, particularly approaching Siwa from the north. A private car also makes it much easier to stop at Bahariya Oasis or the northern coast en route.
No Airport
There is no commercial airport serving Siwa. Charter flights for large groups can be arranged but are not a standard option and will not apply to most visitors. Factor the road journey into your planning.
Getting Around Siwa
The town is small and flat — bicycles are the universal transport for visitors. Most guesthouses either include bicycle hire or can point you to a rental nearby. EGP 50–100/day covers a basic bicycle. Tuk-tuks operate for slightly longer journeys: Fatnas Island (5km), Cleopatra’s Bath (4km), and the palm grove properties. 4WD vehicles for Great Sand Sea excursions are hired through tour operators based in the town — you don’t need your own vehicle for the desert.
Onward from Siwa
Returning to Cairo or Alexandria is the main practical onward option. There is no direct public transport from Siwa to the White Desert or Bahariya Oasis — those itineraries require returning to Cairo and starting fresh, or arranging a private vehicle with a driver. Plan Siwa as either a standalone destination or the endpoint of a Western Desert route rather than a mid-point on a loop.
