Egypt's Inbound Tourism Climbs 15.6% in Q1 2026
Egypt’s tourism sector recorded a 15.6% rise in inbound arrivals during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the country’s minister of tourism. The figure confirms Egypt’s standing as one of the fastest-growing destinations in the region and reflects sustained investment in heritage presentation, infrastructure, and connectivity.
What’s Driving Growth
The Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Plateau continues to generate strong visitor interest. A large-scale expansion of the entire Giza zone is underway, with plans to add 20,000 to 25,000 hotel rooms and introduce new resort, retail, and entertainment facilities over the next three to five years. The government has set a longer-term target of 30 million annual visitors, keeping capital investment flowing into the sector.
New Direct Connections to North America
EgyptAir launched nonstop service from Cairo to Los Angeles on 23 May 2026 — three weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays aboard the Airbus A350-900, covering more than 7,600 miles. The airline follows with a Cairo–Chicago O’Hare service from 21 June. These routes mark Egypt’s first direct West Coast US connection in decades and make travel from North America considerably more straightforward.
Travelling in the Off-Peak Window
May and June are off-peak months for Egypt. Midday temperatures in Luxor and the Nile Valley reach 38–45°C, which keeps crowds down and prices lower. The trade-off — heat — is manageable with early-morning starts, and accommodation and tour discounts of 5–15% are common. Eid al-Adha (26–30 May 2026) may cause adjusted hours at some smaller attractions and markets during this period.
The Red Sea coast — Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, and Dahab — offers a cooler alternative in summer, with water temperatures ideal for diving and snorkelling from May through October.
