Where to Stay in Siwa Oasis
Siwa’s accommodation reflects the oasis itself: small-scale, unhurried, and without the infrastructure of Egypt’s main tourist routes. The total number of beds in the oasis is modest. This is not a resort destination, and the accommodation options need to be understood on those terms. The compensations are real — some of the most characterful places to sleep in all of Egypt are here.
Luxury and High-End Boutique
Adrère Amellal (shore of Birket Siwa, in the dunes) — the standout property in Egypt’s oasis circuit and one of the most remarkable hotels in the country. Built from kershef (salt rock and mud brick) into the side of a white mountain escarpment, with unobstructed views over the lake and the Great Sand Sea beyond. It operates without electricity — no generators, no Wi-Fi, candlelight and firelight only. Rooms are set into the rock with the landscape as the primary amenity. $400–700/night, all-inclusive. Advance booking is essential; the lodge fills well ahead in peak season. For travellers with the budget and the right disposition, it’s one of the best places to stay in Egypt.
Siwa Shali Resort — a larger property in a palm garden setting, the most conventional hotel option in Siwa. More facilities than the smaller guesthouses, less character than the eco-lodges. $80–150/night.
Mid-Range
Taziry Ecolodge (palm garden, outside town) — a well-regarded eco-lodge built in the traditional Kershef style, quieter than the town-centre options. Bicycles provided. $80–140/night.
Palm Trees Hotel (central oasis) — a reliable mid-range option close to the main market and the Shali Fortress. More facilities than a simple guesthouse. $50–90/night.
Siwa Safari Paradise — a mid-range property with a garden setting, good for travellers who want more space than a town-centre guesthouse. $40–80/night.
Budget
Yousef Hotel — the most popular backpacker option in Siwa, basic but clean rooms at the lowest end of the price range. $20–35/night.
Cleopatra Hotel (near the main square) — a simple budget guesthouse in the central area, well placed for the market and restaurants. $25–45/night.
Several guesthouses in and around the old town offer very basic accommodation from $15–30/night. At this level, rooms are functional — clean, simple, shared bathrooms in the cheapest options.
Siwa Shali Lodge (old town area) — the best-known property in the budget-to-mid bracket, embedded in the old town with more character than a standard guesthouse and a reliable reputation. Worth considering before the more anonymous options.
Town Centre Guesthouses
The most affordable accommodation clusters near Siwa’s central market area, in and around the base of Shali Fortress. These are simple guesthouses, often built in the traditional Kershef style. Expect clean but basic rooms, shared bathrooms in the cheaper options, and limited English. Nightly rates run EGP 300–700 ($6–14 at current rates) — making Siwa the most affordable destination we cover on this site.
Mid-Range Palm Grove Lodges
Several properties sit in or adjacent to the palm groves outside the town centre, offering a quieter base with more space and better views than the urban guesthouses. Bicycles are typically provided or available to hire. The trade-off is distance from the town centre — a 10–15 minute bicycle ride to the market and restaurants.
Practical Notes on Wi-Fi and Connectivity
Most accommodation in Siwa offers minimal or unreliable Wi-Fi. Mobile data via a local Egyptian SIM (Vodafone or Orange) is more consistent than property Wi-Fi, though signal is not strong throughout the oasis. Plan for reduced connectivity as a feature of the experience rather than a problem to solve.
Booking Ahead
For most of the year Siwa is uncrowded and accommodation is easy to find on arrival. Two exceptions: October during the Siwa Date Festival (a major local event that draws visitors from across Egypt and beyond), and December–January when European visitors seeking winter warmth arrive in volume. During these periods, book at least 2–3 weeks ahead. Adrère Amellal books out months ahead in peak season regardless.
For more on planning your visit, see our Siwa Oasis guide. Guided tours from Siwa cover the Great Sand Sea dunes, Siwa Oasis historical sites, and the salt lake — most guesthouses can arrange these, or they can be booked in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Adrère Amellal?
- Adrère Amellal is an eco-lodge built from Kershef (salt clay) and palm timber on the shores of Birket Siwa. It operates without electricity — no generators, candles and firelight only. One of Egypt's most distinctive accommodation experiences. It's expensive and needs advance booking, but for travellers who want to experience the oasis without development noise, it's exceptional.
- Is accommodation in Siwa comfortable?
- Siwa is not a luxury destination. Most accommodation is simple — clean but basic, without air conditioning in some cases (the nights are cool year-round; summer days are hot). The eco-lodges offer a different kind of quality: architectural character and silence rather than hotel amenities. Set expectations accordingly.
