Luxor is well connected from Cairo, Aswan, and the Red Sea coast. The choice of how to arrive is one of the more genuine travel decisions in Egypt — the overnight sleeper train is an experience in its own right, while flights are fast and cheap. Below is a full breakdown.

By Air from Cairo

Luxor International Airport (LXR) is served by EgyptAir and several domestic budget carriers. The flight from Cairo takes approximately 1 hour and fares are low — typically $40–80 USD each way on EgyptAir depending on how far in advance you book and whether you’re using domestic or international routing. The airport sits 8km east of the city centre; a taxi to the East Bank costs approximately EGP 80–120. Arrange this directly outside arrivals or use a hotel pickup.

Flying makes sense when time is the primary constraint or if you want to cover more of Egypt in a short trip.

By Overnight Sleeper Train from Cairo

The Watania Sleeper (operated by Watania Transport) is the premium overnight train between Cairo and Luxor (and onwards to Aswan). Trains depart Cairo Ramses station approximately between 7pm and 9pm and arrive in Luxor early the following morning — journey time 10–12 hours.

The trains run 2-person sleeping cabins that convert from seated to bunk configuration. Dinner is served in the early evening and breakfast before arrival. The experience is comfortable rather than luxurious — clean, functional, and genuinely enjoyable in a way that the equivalent night bus is not.

The practical advantage: you don’t lose a day to travel, you don’t pay for a hotel night, and you arrive in Luxor at a sensible hour to start visiting sites. Book at wataniatransport.com. Prices run approximately $60–80 USD per person each way. Book in advance during the November–March peak season — the sleeper is popular and fills weeks ahead.

By Ordinary Daytime Train

Daytime trains run from Cairo Ramses to Luxor and are significantly cheaper than the sleeper. Journey time is 9–10 hours. First and second class carriages are air-conditioned. The experience is perfectly acceptable but a full day on a train to cover a single route is a significant use of time; most travellers prefer the sleeper for the Cairo–Luxor run. Useful if the sleeper is booked out or if you want to move in daytime.

Egyptian train tickets can be booked at the station or through third-party sites. Tourist ticket counters at Ramses station are clearly labelled.

From Aswan

The express train from Aswan to Luxor takes approximately 2 hours and runs several times a day. This is the standard option for the Aswan–Luxor segment and works well in either direction. A Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan (northbound to southbound, 3–4 nights) or Aswan to Luxor (4 nights) is the alternative — a completely different pace and mode of seeing the same stretch of the Nile.

From Hurghada

Hurghada is roughly 200km northeast of Luxor across the Eastern Desert. Private transfers by car take 4–5 hours and are the standard option — the road is well maintained but traverses a significant stretch of desert with nothing en route. Organised day trips and transfers between the two cities operate frequently. Go Bus and some other operators run this route; check current schedules as services change. There is no direct rail connection between Hurghada and Luxor.

Arriving in Luxor

Luxor is compact enough that the main East Bank sights are within walking distance of most hotels in the central area. The Luxor train station is centrally located on the East Bank, a short walk from Luxor Temple and the Corniche. From the airport, taxis are the only realistic option. Uber and Careem have limited or no coverage in Luxor compared to Cairo — local taxis are the norm, and fares for in-city journeys are low.
