Where to Stay in Cairo: Best Neighbourhoods and Hotels

Cairo cityscape with the Nile and city hotels at dusk

Cairo is a large, sprawling city and neighbourhood choice matters more here than in most destinations. Traffic is consistently heavy, and what looks like a short distance on a map can take 45 minutes by car. Knowing where you’ll spend most of your time should drive where you sleep.

Downtown and Garden City

Downtown Cairo (Wust al-Balad) is the most central option, with Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum, and major transport connections all within walking distance. The neighbourhood mixes crumbling belle-époque architecture with functional mid-range hotels, budget hostels, and a handful of upmarket properties. The Kempinski Nile Hotel and Fairmont Nile City are the two standout luxury choices in this area. Garden City, immediately south, is slightly quieter and has several older boutique-style properties set on leafy streets.

Budget accommodation is concentrated here — hostels near Tahrir and along Talaat Harb Street typically charge EGP 200–400 per night for dorm beds and EGP 400–800 for private rooms.

Zamalek

Zamalek occupies the northern half of Gezira Island in the Nile and is our recommended base for most first-time visitors. The neighbourhood is noticeably calmer than Downtown, with tree-lined streets, independent cafes, wine shops, and a concentration of embassies and expatriate residents. Boutique hotels here tend to offer better quality-to-price ratios than their Downtown equivalents. An Uber to Tahrir Square takes 15–20 minutes outside rush hours.

Giza — Near the Pyramids

Several hotels sit on or near the plateau edge with direct pyramid views. If the Pyramids of Giza are your primary focus, staying here makes logistical sense. The Marriott Mena House is the classic choice, with a pool and gardens facing the pyramids. The trade-off is that the surrounding area is thin on restaurants and atmosphere — it is essentially a hotel district around a major monument rather than a functioning neighbourhood.

New Cairo and Fifth Settlement

The modern suburbs east of the city hold international chain hotels at competitive rates. The area is clean and quiet but far from every significant sight. Without a car, getting to Islamic Cairo or Coptic Cairo involves 45–60 minutes of travel each way. This area suits business travellers with meetings in the new districts rather than tourists.

Maadi

Maadi is a pleasant, green residential area in south Cairo, popular with long-term expats. Hotels are fewer and mostly apartment-style. It works well for extended stays or visitors with specific reasons to be in the south of the city, but the 30-minute journey to the pyramids and longer journey to Islamic Cairo make it impractical for short sightseeing trips.

Price Ranges and Booking Timing

Current rough rates: budget accommodation runs $20–50 per night; mid-range hotels $50–120; upscale properties $120–300; luxury $300 and above. These are pre-tax figures — Egyptian hotels add 12–22% in taxes and service charges.

Book well in advance for travel between November and March, which is peak season. Summer (June–August) is significantly quieter and cheaper, though temperatures in Cairo regularly exceed 38°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Cairo?
Zamalek is the best choice for first-time visitors who want a quieter, upscale base with good restaurants nearby. Downtown and Garden City suit those who want to walk to the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square. If the Giza Plateau is your main reason for visiting, the Mena House area puts you closest to the pyramids.
How far are Cairo hotels from the pyramids?
Most central Cairo hotels are 30–45 minutes from the Giza Plateau by Uber. The pyramids are technically in Giza Governorate, not Cairo city. The Marriott Mena House and a handful of hotels on the plateau edge offer direct views and proximity. If you base yourself near the pyramids, expect longer travel times to Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo.
