Where to Stay in Alexandria, Egypt
Alexandria stretches along the Mediterranean coast for roughly 70km. For visitors, the practical range is between the western harbour and the eastern Montaza gardens — a 20km sweep anchored by the Corniche road. Where you stay within this range determines how you experience the city.
Luxury Hotels
Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano (San Stefano district) — the top address in the city, attached to the San Stefano Grand Plaza shopping complex with direct Mediterranean beach access and a rooftop pool. Rooms look out over the sea. $250–450/night.
Steigenberger Cecil Hotel (Corniche, central Alexandria) — a 1929 property with Art Deco interiors restored in recent years. Somerset Maugham and Lawrence Durrell stayed here; it retains genuine architectural character and Corniche-facing sea views. $150–280/night.
Mid-Range Hotels
Helnan Palestine Hotel (Montazah) — set within the grounds of the Montazah Palace gardens on the eastern seafront. Beachfront access and a quieter setting than central Alexandria. $80–150/night.
Marriott Alexandria (Stanley district) — a modern business hotel in the residential eastern city, reliable international-chain standards, convenient for Stanley Beach. $100–180/night.
Renaissance Alexandria Hotel (city centre) — good facilities and a central location. Suits travellers who want consistent amenities close to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. $90–160/night.
Budget Options
El Salamlek Palace Hotel & Casino (Montazah gardens) — a former royal hunting lodge within the Montazah grounds, atmospheric if somewhat dated. Good value for the setting. $60–100/night.
Triomphe Hotel (Raml Station area) — a reliable central budget option, walkable to the main tram stops and Corniche. $35–65/night.
Several independent guesthouses operate around Raml Station from $20–40/night. Quality varies; check recent reviews before booking.
Downtown Alexandria / Raml Station
The area around Raml Station is Alexandria’s historic centre. It sits on the Corniche, walkable distance from Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and connected to the rest of the city by the antique tram network. Budget to mid-range hotels are concentrated here, and the neighbourhood has a lived-in urban character — patisseries, coffee houses, and street food vendors from early morning.
Stanley and Rushdi
Stanley is a residential neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city, built around the Stanley Bridge area and a popular beach. It has a quieter, more local character than central Alexandria and attracts Egyptian domestic tourists in summer. The Marriott operates here. Access to Montazah and the Corniche walk is convenient.
San Stefano
San Stefano is the upscale eastern district. The Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano is the top hotel in the city. For visitors prioritising a high-end beach-oriented stay, this is the address. Rates are significantly above the mid-range Corniche options.
Booking Timing
Summer — July and August particularly — sees Alexandria fill with Egyptian domestic tourists escaping Cairo’s heat. Prices rise sharply and availability at popular properties tightens. Book at least four to six weeks ahead for any summer travel. Shoulder seasons (April–June, September–October) offer better pricing and more availability. Winter is quiet and mild (15–20°C).
Practical Notes
Alexandria’s appeal is inseparable from the Mediterranean waterfront. Hotels far from the Corniche, with no sea proximity and no easy tram or transport access, lose the main reason to stay in the city rather than making a day trip from Cairo. Staying on or within a short walk of the Corniche is worth paying for.
