Where to Stay in Alexandria, Egypt
Alexandria stretches along the Mediterranean coast for roughly 70km. For visitors, the practical range is between the western harbour and the eastern Montaza gardens — a 20km sweep anchored by the Corniche road. Where you stay within this range determines how you experience the city.
Downtown Alexandria / Raml Station
The area around Raml Station is Alexandria’s historic centre. It sits on the Corniche, walkable distance from Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and connected to the rest of the city by the antique tram network. Budget to mid-range hotels are concentrated here, and the neighbourhood has a lived-in urban character — patisseries, coffee houses, and street food vendors from early morning.
Budget options near Raml Station run EGP 300–600 per night. Quality varies; check recent reviews. The Cecil Hotel — now operating as the Steigenberger Cecil — is on the Corniche here. Somerset Maugham and Lawrence Durrell stayed in an earlier version of the building. It retains architectural character even if the rooms are dated. Worth considering if the literary associations matter.
Stanley and Rushdi
Stanley is a residential neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city, built around the Stanley Bridge area and a popular beach. It has a quieter, more local character than central Alexandria and attracts Egyptian domestic tourists in summer. A range of hotels operate here, generally mid-range. Access to Montaza and the Corniche walk is convenient.
San Stefano
San Stefano is the upscale eastern district. The Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano is the top hotel in the city — attached to the San Stefano Grand Plaza shopping mall and with direct beach access. For visitors prioritising a high-end beach-oriented stay, this is the address. Rates are priced accordingly and are significantly above the mid-range Corniche options.
Mid-Range Hotels on the Corniche
A cluster of 3–4 star hotels operates along the central Corniche between the western harbour and Stanley. The Tolip Alexandria and the Holiday Inn Alexandria are established options in this bracket. Rates run approximately EGP 700–2,000 per night depending on season and view. Sea-view rooms command a premium but justify it.
Booking Timing
Summer — July and August particularly — sees Alexandria fill with Egyptian domestic tourists escaping Cairo’s heat. Prices rise sharply and availability at popular properties tightens. Book at least four to six weeks ahead for any summer travel. Shoulder seasons (April–June, September–October) offer better pricing and more availability. Winter is quiet and mild (15–20°C).
Practical Notes
Alexandria’s appeal is inseparable from the Mediterranean waterfront. Hotels far from the Corniche, with no sea proximity and no easy tram or transport access, lose the main reason to stay in the city rather than making a day trip from Cairo. Staying on or within a short walk of the Corniche is worth paying for.
