Dahab Guesthouses Guide: Budget Stays on the Lagoon

Small guesthouses and cafes lining the Dahab lagoon waterfront

Dahab does not have resort hotels. There are no all-inclusive compounds, no private beach zones, and no international chains. What Dahab has instead is a loose collection of small guesthouses, dive lodges, and beach camps strung along the Masbat lagoon, and that difference is precisely the reason many visitors prefer it to Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada.

Getting to Dahab typically means flying into Sharm el-Sheikh airport and taking a shared minibus or private taxi for the 90-minute drive north along the coast. Shared transfers cost approximately EGP 100–200 per person, while a private taxi runs approximately EGP 500–800 as of 2026.

The Lagoon Strip

The Masbat area along the lagoon is where the majority of accommodation sits. Rooms facing the water — with a balcony or rooftop terrace looking out over the turquoise shallows to the mountains of Saudi Arabia on the far shore — are available even at budget prices. This is unusual: in most destinations, water views cost a significant premium. In Dahab they are a standard feature of mid-range guesthouses and sometimes budget ones.

The strip is walkable. Cafes, restaurants, and dive shops occupy the same stretch, and moving between them on foot takes minutes. This compact layout is a significant practical advantage — you will not need taxis or ride-hailing apps for daily life.

Budget Beach Camps

The most basic accommodation in Dahab is the beach camp. These offer mattress-on-a-platform sleeping in open or tented structures, typically with fan cooling and shared bathrooms. Rates run approximately EGP 200–400 per night ($4–8 as of 2026). They are popular with backpackers doing extended travel, freediving students, and travellers who genuinely prioritise cost over comfort.

Alaska Camp and Penguin Village are among the longer-running beach camp operations on the lagoon strip. Both offer basic bamboo hut accommodation with communal areas facing the water. The social atmosphere at these camps is a draw in itself — communal dinners, shared travel planning, and the kind of traveller interaction that resort hotels eliminate.

Mid-Range Guesthouses

At the mid-range level — roughly EGP 500–1,200 per night ($10–24 as of 2026) — the options improve considerably. Guesthouses such as Dahab Divers, Chill Out Camp, and the Lagona Hotel are established properties with ensuite rooms, reliable Wi-Fi, and often some form of breakfast included. This is the most practical bracket for most visitors: clean accommodation with water views and easy access to the lagoon, at prices well below equivalent-quality accommodation in Western European beach destinations.

Coral Coast Hotel offers air-conditioned rooms with lagoon views and a well-regarded in-house restaurant. Rates approximately EGP 800–1,500 per night ($16–30 as of 2026). It sits at the upper end of the mid-range bracket and is a good choice for visitors who want comfort without the impersonal feel of a large hotel.

Dive Lodges

Several Dahab guesthouses are directly attached to dive operations. Reef 2000 and Big Blue are among the better-known combinations of accommodation and diving instruction. Staying at a dive lodge is particularly practical for visitors on multi-day dive courses — the walk from room to dive briefing is measured in metres, and the dive team is on hand throughout the day.

H2O Divers also offers accommodation packages combined with PADI certification courses. A typical Open Water course with accommodation runs approximately $350–450 for 4 days, which represents good value compared to booking diving and accommodation separately. Advanced Open Water packages are also available.

Long-Stay Rates

Dahab functions as a long-stay town in a way that few Egyptian destinations do. Monthly rates are commonly available and can be significantly cheaper than multiplying the nightly rate: a basic room for a month can cost approximately EGP 3,000–5,000 ($60–100 as of 2026), depending on the property and season. Weekly rates are also available at most guesthouses. This makes Dahab a realistic base for remote workers, freediving students doing extended courses, and anyone wanting to use it as a slow travel base for Sinai exploration.

The remote work infrastructure has improved noticeably in recent years. Several cafes on the lagoon strip now offer reliable Wi-Fi suitable for video calls, and a small co-working space has opened. Dahab is not Bali or Lisbon in terms of digital nomad infrastructure, but for those willing to accept occasional connectivity hiccups, the cost of living is remarkably low.

Where to Eat Near Your Guesthouse

The lagoon strip doubles as Dahab’s restaurant row. Ali Baba is one of the longest-running restaurants, serving Egyptian and international dishes at approximately EGP 80–200 per main course. Everyday Cafe draws the remote work crowd with good coffee and all-day breakfast. Ralph’s German Bakery is a Dahab institution for pastries and bread. Fish restaurants along the strip serve fresh catch for approximately EGP 150–300 per portion, depending on the type of fish and season.

Booking

Booking.com lists the majority of established Dahab guesthouses. Some smaller properties and beach camps take direct bookings via WhatsApp, which occasionally results in slightly lower rates. Unlike Cairo or Luxor, Dahab accommodation rarely sells out — but the best lagoon-view rooms at popular mid-range properties can book ahead during peak months (October to March). Summer is quiet and hot, with prices at their lowest. Ramadan can also bring lower prices, though some restaurants adjust their opening hours. Snorkelling and desert tours around Dahab are bookable from most guesthouses or online before you arrive.
