Where to Stay in El Gouna

Lagoon-side villas and waterways in El Gouna resort town

El Gouna’s accommodation is entirely planned — every property sits within the resort town’s island network, purpose-built and managed as part of the development. There are no ad-hoc guesthouses, no independent budget rooms, and no local neighbourhood to wander into. What you get instead is reliable infrastructure, consistent quality standards, and a setting where everything is connected by water taxis or cycling paths.

The town was developed by Samih Sawiris’s Orascom group starting in the 1990s. That single-developer origin means the roads, utilities, and landscaping are maintained to a standard that independent Red Sea towns do not match. Power cuts and water pressure problems that can affect Hurghada properties are largely absent here.

Luxury Hotels

Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna — the largest of El Gouna’s upscale properties, set around an 18-hole championship golf course and lagoon with multiple pools and direct beach access. Rooms face either the golf course or the lagoon, with the lagoon-view rooms commanding a premium. The spa and dining options are extensive. A full-facilities resort in the international chain mould. Approximately $200–400/night as of 2026.

Movenpick Resort & Spa El Gouna — a well-established property with direct Red Sea beach access and 557 rooms spread across low-rise buildings. Draws repeat visitors — the consistency of service at Movenpick properties is a factor for those who have stayed with the brand elsewhere. The resort includes four restaurants, three pools, and a dedicated dive centre operated by a third-party outfit. Water sports equipment rental is available on the beach. Approximately $180–350/night as of 2026.

Sheraton Miramar Resort El Gouna — occupies its own island within El Gouna, connected to the main town by a bridge. Private beach, lagoon, and the full facilities of an international chain property. The island setting provides genuine separation from the rest of the town — quieter than properties on the marina. The architecture follows a Nubian-inspired design with domed roofs, which makes it visually distinct from the other luxury properties. Rooms are spacious; the larger suites have private plunge pools. Approximately $180–320/night as of 2026.

Mid-Range and Boutique

Dawar El Omda (Abu Tig Marina, “downtown” El Gouna) — the most characterful option in El Gouna. A boutique hotel designed in a traditional Egyptian architectural style, noticeably different from the international chain properties elsewhere in town. The building wraps around a central courtyard with a small pool, and the rooftop terrace has marina views. Smaller, with fewer beach facilities, but well placed for walking to the marina and the main restaurant strip. Best suited to independent travellers who want atmosphere over resort infrastructure. Approximately $100–180/night as of 2026.

Club Med El Gouna (beachfront) — an all-inclusive format that works well for families and those who want a single price for the stay. The activity programme includes sailing, windsurfing, tennis, and a children’s club. The beach section is one of the better-maintained stretches in town. Approximately $150–280/night for two, all-inclusive, as of 2026.

Three Corners Ocean View Hotel — a more affordable mid-range option on the lagoon, popular with European package holidaymakers. Rooms are functional rather than luxurious, but the location and pool area are solid for the price. Approximately $80–150/night as of 2026.

Budget and Self-Catering

El Gouna has no true budget hotel tier — this is not a destination for backpackers. However, a significant serviced apartment market exists for longer stays: studios from approximately $60–100/night through the town’s letting agencies and platforms like Airbnb.

Abu Tig Marina apartments — a popular option for remote workers and longer-stay visitors who want kitchen access and marina proximity. Rates from approximately $70–120/night depending on size and season. Monthly rates drop significantly, often to $1,200–1,800/month for a furnished studio. The marina location means restaurants, cafes, and a small supermarket are within walking distance.

Choosing Between Areas

El Gouna has two main accommodation zones. The marina area around Abu Tig puts you within walking distance of restaurants, bars, and the town’s social centre. It suits independent travellers and those who want to eat out rather than rely on hotel buffets. The beach and lagoon zone further from the marina is where the large resort hotels sit — quieter, more self-contained, and better suited to families and guests who plan to spend most of their time at the pool or beach.

Water taxis connect the two areas, running approximately every 20 minutes during daylight hours. The TukTuk service (small electric vehicles, not the Asian three-wheelers) covers the town for approximately EGP 30–50 per trip as of 2026.

Pricing and What to Expect

El Gouna runs 30–50% more expensive than equivalent accommodation in Hurghada. The premium reflects the planned environment, reliable utilities, and the marina setting rather than a significant difference in room quality.

Remote workers occasionally base in El Gouna for weeks at a time — the internet infrastructure is among the most reliable on the Red Sea coast, and the walking-distance access to good restaurants and the lagoon makes for a comfortable setup. Co-working spaces have opened in the marina area, and several cafes offer reliable Wi-Fi suitable for video calls. The trade-off is the complete absence of authentic local life — El Gouna is a resort development, not an Egyptian town.

When to Book

High season runs from October to April, with peak pricing around Christmas, New Year, and European school holidays. Summer months (June–August) are extremely hot — daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C — and prices drop accordingly. The shoulder months of May and September offer a reasonable balance between heat and pricing.
